The Luger did not have a safety, unlike the 1911 pistol that the Americans used as their pistol. It wasn't uncommon for accidental wounds to happen with it because the American soldiers weren't familiar with it. The Germans knew not to handle it carelessly, and they often did not keep a round chambered, as was the practice with the 1911.
