People coming out of dysfunctional or toxic home lives donβt know the emotional rewards of caring about other people. And itβs not just about rewards, it builds something up inside you when you have a strong relationship that is supportive from both sides, platonic or romantic or whatever. You will sacrifice for others out of caring but the caring comes first, and you canβt get there without at least being nice and making effort to others, even if that is initially selfishly motivated. The relationships have to develop somehow for people to learn that there are other ways to live, aside from self-preservation.
