An unfortunate delay
Added 2022-02-18 23:58:32 +0000 UTCUsually around this time of the month, I'm here to announce the pending release of the new chapter. Unfortunately, there's been a minor delay. Due to the sheer volume of content in this chapter, I knew it'd take a little longer than normal, but...
Anyone who says a SSD doesn't have moving parts that can't be broken is FULL OF SHIT. And you have my permission to tell them to go to hell.
I dropped my SSD the other day off of my desk and it refused to boot up, only clicking to let me know it was getting power. After opening it up, I noticed that the armature necessary to read the data was broken. What does this mean?
The BAD
- Basically I lost recent copies of everything. All my scene data since the last backup is gone. It was less than a month's worth, but entirely all the content from this update and some work for the endings has just ceased to exist.
- I have to reinstall everything and make sure it's running right AGAIN. Where this will be a problem is the custom settings I use for video output from Premier Pro and the tweaks I made to the Ren'Py SDK to make android builds take less time.
- All of the animations for this chapter are gone. I was going to back them up today, so that's super bad timing. More on that in the good.
The GOOD
- I had a backup of the code and script in my main drive and a thumb drive. Outside of some clean up and testing the code, this is done. Say 98-99% In fact, I was about to do the last script clean up before this happened. There are probably some hiccups in the recovered code that'll need to be ironed out, but that beats rewriting the entire chapter.
- I have a backup of the renders from a day before losing the drive. Meaning that outside of a few reshoots (probably 15 images out of almost 1200), I was done with that.
- Animations will have to be recreated but this will hopefully only take a couple of days to do. All of the locations are already existing sets, so it's a matter of reposing and making sure the lighting and camera effects are the same. By the time you read this, I'll probably already have most of Sydney's reshoots done (I knocked out three of the animations in the hour before work this morning).
So, the release will have to be delayed, but it shouldn't be too long. A lot of what has to happen is just filling in the spots that were lost and since I already know what the scenes should look like and the script and code is already locked in, it should just be a matter of getting time to work on it.
All apologies for the delay, but let me assure you that this chapter is pretty damn big. Not as big as Chapter 16, but it probably clocks in as a top three in terms of content. As I mentioned on the Discord, the final action set piece is over 240 unique renders (including 50+ in the last sequence) with multiple variations on how to get to the end.

My first home computer was a Commodore 64, with a cassette tape deck for storing games & files, no less (early 80’s). I have lost plenty of work in the ensuing 40 years, so I feel for you. However long it takes to redo your work, know you are loved and appreciated for it.

2022-02-20 17:08:03 +0000 UTCYou're correct, WD Passport drives are HDDs and not SSDs. I have a 2TB model for my old MBP. And there really are no moving parts in an SSD (though that doesn't mean they're indestructible).

2022-02-20 14:37:43 +0000 UTCYeah, there's at least one scene I'll basically have to reshoot the entire thing because the lighting/camera settings were custom to that sequence and I may not be able to replicate without noticeable issues.

2022-02-20 02:46:07 +0000 UTCAh. Also ouch. I can see how that will make redoing those animations a royal pain. Same with reshoots. That could even lead to extra reshoots in order to maintain consistency between stills and animations. That is a potential snowball problem there.

2022-02-20 01:14:05 +0000 UTCScene data in Honey Select is basically a file (PNG) where sets, lighting and characters are arranged. It's like a bookmark in the studio where you load it and the scene you want to shoot/animate boots right up with the characters and lighting is already arranged.

2022-02-20 00:31:40 +0000 UTCQuestion from the uninitiated. What is the scene data? I would have assumed it was something like sets, but given one of the good items, I am clearly off base. I supposed I am trying to understand how bad it is.

2022-02-19 23:56:40 +0000 UTCThe only 5TB Passports I can find are full HDDs. Definitely seems quite mechanical and yeah, led to your issues with the impact. I hope you invest in some sort of cloud storage sync and at least one extra direct attached storage backup that isn't portable. Stationary things have a lot longer lifespans in general. I'm sorry for the data loss, but it sounds like it is all fairly recoverable with some extra effort. Keep up the fantastic work.

2022-02-19 20:34:11 +0000 UTCWestern Digital 5TB Passport. It's being sold as and packaged as an SSD. If it's a hybrid then that's some f'ing malpractice right there.

2022-02-19 13:02:04 +0000 UTCThere is more technical advice here than I could possibly offer - but it is good for me to know. I'm Irish and Murphy is Always hanging around so - I'm glad that the loss was not worse. This is the culmination of several years of work so Please take the time you need to get the ending the way You want it to be. I've enjoyed the story so far and I know that the ending will be just as rewarding as the story to get here was.

2022-02-19 10:48:09 +0000 UTCWell at least you had monthly backups - that is leagues ahead of a lot of other devs. I would suggest weekly or more though.

2022-02-19 09:19:06 +0000 UTCWhat make and model disk was this? Just asking because it sounds like a hybrid SSD.

2022-02-19 02:12:02 +0000 UTCUse git with gitlab. They offer 10 gb of free storage for your code base. Every app/game should use it. No more failing hardware. Dm me if you want help setting it up.

2022-02-19 01:03:35 +0000 UTCAs a server tech, I have literally replaced 10s of thousands of SSDs. (I assume you had an external drive, rather than one installed in the machine.) They break just about as easily as HDDs. Cloud storage or M.2 drives are what you should use. Heck, SATA works for additional storage, and it's on a seperate controller. You could easily mount and connect 7gb of SSDs internally in a PC. And, if you got huge SSDs, the number could easily reach 21gb. Beyond that, you'll probably want HDDs or a RAID controler or HBA.

2022-02-19 00:23:38 +0000 UTCOuch! I feel the pain. Stuff like this also highlights the need to improve on automated backups. Personally, I keep all of my important data inside a folder that's constantly synced to a cloud storage service (Dropbox, in my case). This means I'll have access to these files on any computer I log on to, including mobile devices. If you're more part of a team, several cloud storage providers allow collaborative folders, and pay-per-user for businesses/teams. It's a surprisingly "cheap" alternative to losing a lot of work when a hardrive fails. A few of the major ones: Dropbox Business, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace (previously called G Suite), MEGA for Business (yes, they also have a solution for this).

2022-02-19 00:23:08 +0000 UTCI see you learned the hard way about the need to have every aspect of an SSD-setup backed up and tested. I have cloned backups of my system setup and working files. I also have backups that I check up on every day. Every month or so, I do a "live" test restoring from one of my backups to make sure they are viable. All but one of my drives are SSD, and the one that is not is a straight-up backup drive. I'm glad it wasn't any worse, but lesson learned for the future, right?
