Hmm, the most important thing is definitely contrast. Use value, color, shape, etc. contrast as a tool and always try to have a clear primary and secondary read. The importance of getting a good grip on all the possible ways you can create and wield contrast is hard to overstate. Also, try to think about gesture in composition in the same way you would think about it in a figure, for example. Always think about the big curves in the image and how they connect or counter-balance off each other.
