Editing When Doing Studies

Here's a painting I'm doing as a gift for a friend and pretty much treating like a slightly caricatured study.

It's very important to be conscious when doing studies, because if not diligent people generally tend to fall into auto-pilot.  A good way to avoid this is to simply try to caricature or consciously tweak your subject matter. It really doesn't matter in which way you do it or how much, as long as it's thought through, rather than automatic.

At this stage everything is very segmented - and every stage represents an addition of a layer, essentially. When I lay in the shadows I really don't care much about their color or value, but rather just their placement and the edges, which is more of a drawing thing, and then I'll move into adding color and different, more correct values later.

I'll also exaggerate or change up the colors and values in some way, I'm not sure how yet but I'll def make those cast shadows on the ground way more cool and possibly add some cool fill lights in the cast shadows on the figures, as well as exaggerating the local colors of the skin further still. I know I want to make the image feel more tropical and lively.

I've also attached the ref image to see what I changed.
