It's interesting to hear you say the show has gotten stale because it has too many episodes. I see where you're coming from but I think the problem is what they're doing with the episodes in this period. They (IMO) move through plot too quickly and don't take time to explore things and breathe even though there are a lot of interesting set ups. Earlier seasons had 20+ episode and each one was a new fun monster or idea that was engaging, and that was used for character development. In this period I think it leans plot, plot, plot and they rely too heavily on their old standards. Like there was no reason to spend two episodes of this season chasing Lucifer around AGAIN instead of a Monster of the week case that subtly highlighted Mary's guilt or Dean's feeling that she's ashamed of them, or Sam's anxiety about being peacemaker. Or maybe something that points out that in childhood Dean was always in the middle of Sam and John and now it's reversed. Like the interesting dynamics are there and they have the episodes to use them they're just... not doing that. I mean even last episode being about a Rowena/Crowely should've felt a parallel to the boys drama with their mother. But it didn't. I like shows with high episode counts but you have to know how to use them effectively. I also think for marathon sake the show is hurt by broadcasting schedules. You need 'winter finales' and sweeps week and yada yada and it ruins the flow of what would be naturally paced storytelling.
