I thought Steven’s point was more that he’s never around and doesn’t seem to be responsible for anything the kids do and just breeze in every now and then instead of actually co-parenting.

The only thing said of their parting was in the previous episode when Zack told him he was ready to go back to the hotel, Kurt remarked "That's exactly what your mom said when she left me..." I personally think it's more realistic to show divorced parents being able to get along.
