I believe there was a hint on Crackstone back in episode 3 and the vision of the barn being burned down. There's a sound made when he staff hits the ground(the same sound it made in episode 8.) To put it simply, I don't believe he was a "normie' in the first place. He was an outcast(maybe in hiding?) That's my theory anyway since the sound was quite obvious to me if you go back and look for it.
