I’m too late as always but -A was texting Melissa. We saw them at the end of this episode put his phone in Spencer’s backpack. Also, Spencer telling Wren that Ian tried to kill her is not gossip at all, or weird, quite frankly. It’s literally what happened and Wren should know this information before trying to help Ian out because it lets him know that he’s dangerous. Melissa made it clear whose side she’s on, so Spencer is trying to protect herself AND Melissa deep down.
