Steven, I don't think you picked up on Gunn's line of "I didn't think it would be one of us", basically indicating he knew *someone* would end up the victim of whatever it was he signed. He just didn't care because it would be someone random... So in a way, he did know. He just didn't know the details or that it would be Fred.

Bookended with A Whole in the world starting with the Fred Flashback right before leaving for LA and then Shells ending with the continuation of that flashback and Fred driving away from home. As much as I love Fred as a character, they weren’t giving her much to do the last two seasons other than be a love interest for Gunn and Wes. And because Amy Acker stays on the show (check out the new credits next episode) but now gets to play a very interesting new character I kind of love it. We get this emotional and amazing two-part episode and in the end get to have Amy Acker stay on the show but as a really interesting new character that shakes up the show in such a fun way.
