sookie rhymes with cookie - you had it right toward the end. yes, the show was based on a series of books. regarding sookie's willingness to approach bill/not being afraid to talk to him, and based only on what we've seen so far - i'd guess in the first instance that her ability to hear people's thoughts may have made her feel safer acting on her curiosity (like she'd have an early warning), as well as the public setting. and then at the end of the episode, i think she went over in part because she knew she -couldn't- hear his thoughts (imagine how nice that would be compared with the constant noise), plus he hadn't tried to harm her after she rescued him from the rattrays.
