They live in the greater Los Angeles area, an unnamed suburban part of it. As with many suburban families, all their work and school is nearby, so we never see them go into LA (except to use the airport etc.). Did you say you were unfamiliar with the term "dude ranch"? It's a ranch that caters to visitors, like this one: people pay to have a carefully managed "ranch experience" -- ride and maybe rope a horse, hike, sit around the campfire after dinner, sleep in a cabin, all that.
