It's great to hear you're enjoying the show! Since you discussed it being a procedural and asked if you'd missed anything in terms of a storyline: there really isn't an underlying/overarching story apart from the growth (albeit stunted) of Shawn, his dad, Gus, and the precinct crew. However, there are sometimes multi-episode arcs, or callbacks, and a few truly awesome villains that make some repeat appearances.
