And props to Rider Strong for displaying so many emotions with subtle expressions. He's a theater kid and loves more melodrama stuff, and the show literally gave him this depth cause of Rider. They always hinted at his home life but they gave him the detailed story cause of how well Rider portrayed those scenes in season 1.

This is the real turning point. The show is never the same after this, but in a good way. I will always love Shawn Hunter. His story only goes deeper. It's the way he smiles through the pain and skirts around asking for help. He clearly went to Mr. Turner to find comfort and he was obviously scared to be alone. I think it also says a lot that he went to Turner and not Cory, probably cause he was embarrassed to look like he wants help. His character is so complicated and yet, so simple. He's a young boy who is in pain but afraid to show it. And you're right. His dad probably gave him 50$ and said to make something of it. Shawn had to get help from the people at the hotel. It's so dangerous for a 13 year old boy to be alone on the streets like that.

So one of my favourite things in this episode, it's really subtle and all, but look at Turner's clothes and look at Chet's clothes. They've basically got the same clothes on. And to a lesser extent, so did Feeny, same colour palette. And Shawn had similar colours, just darker. It's a really cool way to kinda link the characters. The fact that Feeny has been Shawn's teacher for a long time and yet he's apparently never met Chet before though... That says a lot. Turner being willing to have his date end to make sure Shawn is okay and safe is so great. And then him giving him the food and letting him sleep there. And just being willing to have him stop by whenever because he knows he's in a horrible situation. And his reaction to finding out his Dad left him at that Motel. That says a lot, he was uncomfortable with the idea of him being there. I think he was probably really relieved when he fell asleep on his couch because it meant he didn't have to take him back. I honestly think the only reason he didn't go off on Chet is because Shawn was there and he knows Shawn at this point and knows it wouldn't help much. Also, this episode kinda explains why the Pop Quiz episode had to happen, because that's why Shawn knows where Turner lives. Haha It's really sweet that of all places he chose Turner's. Because that question was BS. He was upset and alone and freaked out being in that Motel and so he went somewhere he knew he'd be safe. When Chet's speaking in class, you can see that Shawn is actually very uncomfortable because he knows that everything he's saying is a lie. It's why he was so adamant that Alan wasn't that bad, because he actually works and does put money on the table. And is there for his family. Which is more than he can say about his own Dad. I don't think he would've minded him making up stories if he actually had a job, but the fact that he didn't is what made it as bad as it was for him. That's the problem with living in a trailer unfortunately. It's easy to drive it off. Poor Shawn. First he loses his Mother, then his home and then his Father too. And the fact that his first response was to just go home and wait as she always comes back, and then that Alan's first reaction was that she's done this before. We really got a good look into Shawn's home life this episode. I love that conversation with Cory and Alan at the end too. Because I do get where Cory's embarrassment was coming from. I wouldn't have been embarrassed, but I guess with all those other parents with such cool jobs, it'd be hard not to be. But then he got a good look at Shawn's Dad for real (who, btw, DOESN'T EVEN KNOW HIS NAME! Cory and Shawn have been best friends basically their whole lives and Chet doesn't even know Cory's name... Or Alan's...) and realised that what's said at Career Day doesn't really matter. All that really matters is how good a parent Alan is, and that he's always there and that he's willing to let Shawn stay with them. Also, small moment. But like, Chet is literally off to find his wife. He's off to look for her because she's run away and he desperately wants her back and all that. And yet basically the last thing he says is "Texas women couldn't keep me from here." Like, DUDE! You're literally leaving your son to supposedly go find your wife, and yet you're talking about Texas women?! Eric and Jason provided some much needed comic relief this episode. Poor Eric was not having a good time... Haha
