I’ve always thought that the demon they called upon to remove Angel’s soul contacted Giles and that was how they learned the plan and were able to use it to their advantage. I guess that MAYBE they got some idea of the plan from Buffy and Angel discussing what happened between Angel and Faith and some how guessed what the Mayor and Faith could be aiming for and who they would need help from. But honestly, that sounds pretty far fetched to me.

2023-06-06 05:50:37 +0000 UTCThe part where Willow told Buffy she needs to go talk to Angel when Buffy confided in Willow about wondering if something was going on between Faith and Angel, Buffy actually got up and left to go talk to Angel to follow Willow's advice at that exact moment but they didn't show us the convo with Angel, I believe that was when the plan started to be made, they planned it off screen. But that was when they got ahead of Faith's plan.
