2023-06-13 11:23:55 +0000 UTCI actually like Mary. She does have her callous moments but I think that has more to do with the sense of entitlement that her upbringing has given her. She does care about people, even feeling guilty about snooping in the servants' rooms when she knew it was wrong to be invading their privacy. The Duke couldn't understand why she'd apologise to a servant when the house belonged to her family but Mary knew better and applogised anyway. I was okay with her apathy towards Patrick's death because the vibe I got from this episode alone was that it was to be a marriage of convenience. Maybe even an arranged marriage or just something that she was pressured into, which isn't that uncommon back then when old money is involved. Just based on her reaction and relief in this episode, I think she didn't love Patrick, that she wasn't loved by Patrick and she felt so trapped by the engagement that she felt nothing but relief when he died. It's like she said to the youngest sister Sybil, she was sad that she wasn't as sad as she was supposed to be because that really meant that she would have been marrying someone she didn't love, for the obligation. I think Sybil, the youngest sister, and Anna, the blonde maid who gave Bates his tray of food, are my ultimate two characters though. They're both so kind and lovely. Also, I think they were "jumping" a little to move the story along. Otherwise we would be stuck just grieving two characters we never even met and we wouldn't have been introduced to the new heir at the end. And Daisy, the girl that shouldn't be seen upstairs, is the kitchen maid. There are a ton of different roles in a great house like this, which is so fascinating, and a kitchen maid took care of the dirtier jobs and was generally not allowed to be present in "noble" presence cuz...I dunno? It might offend them to see a staff covered in soot?? Lol they were uptight about these things I guess. Really hope you continue this series, maybe when you're done with Bridgerton? To replace it?

2023-06-12 15:47:31 +0000 UTCI know a lot of people like Bridgerton and it is a good show, but I did like Downton more, I just like what they do with all the characters. It did take me a little bit to get into it, because at the time I didn't watch a lot of period shows, but now I watch a lot of them thanks to Downton. Mary is a character that I do like, but sometimes I think can come off a bit callous and mean. Although I do like a lot of characters in this show, Sybil is probably my favorite. I do hope you get to see more of the series.

The biggest plus of this show for me was the characters development - lots of characters. Seriously, probably one of the best I know among all the ones I've watched.

It got to be too much for me lol. I love Downton though. I love that we have servants' storylines too. It gets so dramatic in the best ways lol. Such shocking twists. Really hope you continue with this.

2023-06-12 00:46:20 +0000 UTCI think I read your mind at one point, so I will say that you vaguely remember Robert (the main upstairs dude) as the pirate with the little boy in Doctor Who. I would also venture to say that if you can't place an actor on this show from Harry Potter or Game of Thrones, it's probably Doctor Who. Although the youngest daughter (aka the hot one) did have a memorable episode of Misfits as a creepy cult leader girl. And this Dan Stevens is like Parks and Rec Chris Pratt (a little doughy). I guess the pacing just takes getting used to. It never bothered me, but I watch a lot of period dramas. It's probably best described as a historically set soap opera with a crazy ass budget. That's why there are some "types" in the characters. The spoiled oldest daughter, the sweet maid, the scheming maid, the show takes those trope characters to start and then slowly fleshes them out as the world around them and history affects their lives. The biggest difference between this and Bridgerton, other than this being more reality based, is that it spends about equal time with the servants as it does the rich people. They actually change the pacing and camera steadiness between upstairs and downstairs. Finally, that is a real house and they did film in the grounds and in many of the main rooms. The downstairs was recreated on a soundstage for shooting. Highclere Castle, as it's actually called is owned by the 8th? Earl of Carnarvon. His ancestor who would be from the show's time period is the guy who financed the expedition that found King Tut's tomb, just to give you the idea of the kind of hobbies these types of rich people had the option to have.

This episode covered a lot of exposition with the situation with the inheritance basically setting up that they donβt have a way around the cousin inheriting everything. The rest of the episodes move at a normal pace for season 1
