remember, kate rides to clear her head. it's something we've seen her go and do multiple times; she takes the horse and just *goes* so this is what she was doing here. she wasn't trying to run away. she just wanted to get out, clear her head. she got caught up in all the emotions and turmoil and needed out. we've seen her take the horse and go just like this in the first episode, stressed and worried about her family's situation (though we didn't know that at the time of seeing her). it's alluded to several times as well that she goes out on rides and how much she adores horses. to me, it didn't feel random or melodramtic but maybe that's just me
