As a neurodivergent person myself (though not on Lilo's spectrum), I feel really bad for Nani. I'm not strong or patient enough to deal with a kid like Lilo. It takes a special kind of person to deal with that, on top of losing her parents too. And Nani is only 18!?!? I remember thinking Nani was so old and a grown up when I first watched this as a kid. 18 is nothing. She's still a baby herself. Poor Nani. I feel for Lilo, too. So different. Probably unable to find a way to really express her emotions. It's telling that she's able to form a bond with a deranged alien than regular humans. Everything Lilo does is sad. Like the reason behind feeding the fish peanut butter sandwich so he can control the weather and keep the rain away...these cartoons are not just for kids. They're pretty dark. Stitch is my fav alien of all time, including Doctor Who. He's so CUTE and so smart. I wanted a real life Stitch so badly when I was little. Lilo means "lost" and Stitch means "put back together" so I guess there's a poetry to their names. She was lost and he put her back together. And he calls out "lost" after he left Lilo... Everything from Nani singing to Lilo on the hammock onwards has me sobbing like a baby. Lilo is legit not dealing with all her trauma. Nani is trying so hard but she's still a kid herself struggling to find a balance...it's tough. I do like that they gave us Pleakley who doesn't blink about wearing makeup, wigs and dresses and much rather wear those than anything else. They keep blaming Nani for everything. I get that she's supposed to be the guardian but a drowning accident?? It's an accident! She's a guardian, not a god! I LOVE Stitch's talking voice. And he's so funny, too. That "okay" when Jumba told him he shouldn't play with guns was so cute!!! He learned to talk so fast! He's such a little genius! I think it's cool that they hinted at Lilo's neurodivergence when Nani told Cobra Bubbles (I love his name lol) that no one else understands Lilo. Why am I NEVER ready for Stitch's "family" speech at the end?? I do enjoy that Cobra Bubbles has just become part of the family. And even Jumba and Pleakley. I used to watch the animated series religiously though I can't remember a thing about it now. Can't remember if there was ever an exploration of Cobra Bubbles' backstory in that. Would be interesting to know more, though. I like that their family seems to find a balanced, solid ground after this. Nani seems like she's accepted the help from a supportive network (David, Jumba, Pleakley and even Cobra Bubbles) and has even probably settled into a more stable financial situation where she could enjoy outings and holidays with her family, and Lilo and Stitch have found the family they so desperately needed. They don't care that everyone else see them as weird. They've got each other and that's all that matters.

Also her parents died in a car accident because it was raining and the beginning you find out she had to give pudge the fish a peanut butter sandwich because he controls the weather.

yes!!! not to mention on top of whatever flavor of neurodivergence (i fully believe she's autistic too, as an autistic girl myself) she's also dealing with the trauma of losing her parents and now having to adjust to her big sister being her parent now. baby girl is struggling through a lot, snd having to do it all on her own. thankfully her prayer was answered and stitch came to her so they could help one another

So it's a fan theory that Lilo has autism. Which I can say, as someone with it, she totally fits the criteria.

Yes, Stitch's ugly duckling story and the "little and broken" part still to this day makes me SOB but I gotta say...I don't think I could care for a kid like Lilo. She's a little too mischievous lol

i love this movie so much. lilo is everything!! she truly gave a voice to the "weird little girls" and i love that about her. stitch also just totally breaks my heart, especially when he says "it's little and broken" and his reaction to the ugly duckling story!! he always makes me cry, no matter how many times i've seen the movie!
