iCarly "iHate Sam's Boyfriend" 1x15 Reaction

Comments

oh ya'll are dramatic dramatic lol I thought he went on a two-minute tirade about Sam being awful based on these comments and I finally watched it and it was one off-hand comment during the reaction and then him calling her annoying in the review section lol I think the comments he made were totally earned this episode and we should know by now that sometimes when Steven calls a character the worst, it doesn't mean he necessarily hates or dislikes the character. Some other shows, I understand the passion, but not with this one. I think Sam is fun, and recognize that Jade and Sam are made to be similar characters, but I also like Jade a lot better than Sam because I prefer the way she interacts with other characters. She's mean and cruel and prone to outbursts, sure, but she also has great chemistry with everyone and really rounds out the friend group. I can see how at this moment with Sam, it doesn't feel that way.

I Am Not Chamari

not true at all. sam isnt my favorite character. and its not him calling them “the worst” he says way harsher shit than that. and he does it a lot. to a lot of female characters that i dont even care about. just a pattern i noticed and apparently others have too. people are just saying it ruins their enjoyment of some of the reactions. it’d be fine if they were valid criticisms but a lot of times they arent. it wasnt always like this tho but if multiple people are noticing it idk what to tell u

how come?

Were we watching the same show? You described Jerry and Theresa for S1 but damn sure not for S3 or S4 lmao

KandyRenee

It’s kind of a wild take to say that he’s excessively negative to female characters in particular while acknowledging that he likes other female characters and doesn’t react the same way to them. I think the issue here is that this is the first time he doesn’t like the same characters that some of you do. I’ve also seen him use the term “the worst” to describe tons of characters, regardless of gender, and for sometimes the most random things. That doesn’t mean he hates or even dislikes the character. He’s called Raven the worst and very clearly loves her. He’s called Morgan from Criminal Minds the worst when I felt he hadn’t done anything wrong. It honestly just seems like something he says.

Yeahhh I also get frustrated with the hate towards sam, alex and the parents. Calling them the worst when sometimes especially with the parents it’s for minor things. I’d say Jade is far worse than Sam. She literally tried to kill and poison Tori because she wanted to be in the school play. Jade has never apologized sincerely for anything she’s done. And oftentimes get rewarded for it. I’d say Sam has character development while Jade never did Alex has been the same character she’s always been so don’t understand the sudden hate for her when she was liked before for the same behavior. But then again somtimes she’s also been blamed a lot for things that she had no control over and wasn’t her fault. And I don’t get how Jerry and Theresa are the worst when they aren’t oblivious like 90% of Disney parents, aren’t negligent, listen to their kids problems and have serious moments with them, have the kids learn their lesson by teaching them to work out their problems on their own so they aren’t coddled, give great advice and they actually care. Sure Theresa tries to act cool and young and Jerry can be cheap, they are out there but how does that make them bad parents or even bad people? IMO they are part of the better group of Disney parents even one of the best.

Yeah he can like or dislike whoever he wants but just be consistent with it. You can’t say “Sam’s the worst” but then at the same time love Jade from Victorious because they are basically the same types of character where they both can be the mean girl, both can be bullies but also have hearts deep deep down. Like Jade and Sam would be good friends if they actively knew each other because they have some similar traits and calling out a character’s problematic traits is fine but again be consistent with it because in Victorious, I don’t ever remember him calling out Jade’s problematic traits because they are definitely episodes where she did shady stuff and I don’t remember it being called out. Just don’t be bias is all I’m saying, gotta be objective.

I think the biggest issue is that a lot of these characters from Schneider's works (and other works really) have not aged well. If you grew up with these characters and have an attachment to them, it may be hard to see it, but I don't see any issue in Steven highlighting problematic elements. He never said he disliked her (and even if he did, he can like or dislike whatever characters he wants). Does Sam have a lot of funny and sympathetic moments, yes. She's also a bully to everyone but Carly and Spencer. It's not wrong to note that Sam's character has aged the worst and she has a lot of good and bad moments coming up in later episodes. It's not 2007 anymore and attitudes towards bullying has shifted massively. Also, we haven't even gotten to the episodes that explore Sam's homelife, so Steven's only going off the information he has at the moment.

yeah the greys ones are def a lil unbearable at times

i've held my tongue on this for awhile now but lately i've noticed this shift in a vibe that i haven't ever experienced on the channel before. it seems like you find reasons to hate female characters and things to nitpick at them for you. you do it with grey's (meredith asks a question and you say 'why is she speaking'), charmed (you got upset when one of the sisters wore a dress or a skirt and wondered what she was so dressed up for), criminal minds (getting annoyed with garcia and now saying emily is interjecting herself too much when she's just as much a part of the team as everyone else), and now this. i absolutely do not believe in glorifying female characters just because they're female and i do believe in calling them out when they do shitty things. i'm the furthest person from the whole "hashtag girlboss" thing but like...sometimes it feels like searching for things to hate on these women for when there's no really good reason to. and it's been happening more and more in the last few months and in a way that's very noticable to me that i haven't ever noticed here before. this kind of almost annoyance and frustration towards female characters who are sometimes just existing. their flaws and their humanness don't get the grace and patience that their male counterparts who sometimes behave even worse do. it's like searching for things to hate on them for, and then getting so wrapped up in that that that becomes much of the focus of the reaction. i don't know if i'm just suddenly being overly sensitive to this, or if anyone else has noticed this too. but it's kind of put a damper on some reactions for me.

im pretty sure jennette who played sam dated the guy who played her boyfriend jonah in this episode in real life

milk

i cut a little slack for sam just knowing about her home life and how young she is. you’ll see eventually she’s there for carly and freddie when it really counts :)

Jade was mean too lol. Bro let’s stop this notion that Tori wasn’t a nice and good person, that’s false. There were so many episodes in that show where she helped everybody out. I agree about Beck but the notion that Tori wasn’t a nice and good person is ridiculous. Also you gotta admit you were bias towards Jade, like the whole bringing up the girl code with her and Tori when they ain’t even really friends when it came to the possibility of Tori dating Beck but then not bringing up the bro code when you wanted Andre and Jade to be together is something I noticed.

Juy Ahmad

I never said I didn’t like Sam, she is just mean. But I did like Jade and I’m not as in Like with Sam. I guess because Sam does a lot to take advantage of Freddie and Carly while Jade didn’t really that often do that. Also Carly and Freddie are way Nicer and better people than Tori and Beck so that could also play a roll.

Steven Merced

especially cause sam is younger lol. But he does call out Jade sometimes. i guess the excuse could be that Jade never claims to be friends with the group (except andre and beck, her bf).

Angie

So you’re not too fond of Sam but you love Jade from Victorious? Bro please explain lol
