Men and boy rape is the most unreported cuz when it happens to women and girls people understand why cuz they can be overpowered but when a man or boy says it especially if it was a guy who did it people say “why didn’t u fight back” men and boys don’t get sympathy generally that’s why Morgan never said anything

I wonder if Derek's conversation with Damien led him to figuring out that James was also Carl's victim or he was just able to piece it together now. Memory is a bitch, especially as it relates to trauma, so even if Derek thought or felt that something might have been going on with other children, he could have convinced himself that he was making it up or that it was all in his head. Even at Morgan's big age, you can see Carl's continued effect on him. The fact that Carl even tried to tell him that he did nothing to him and even that he said "you could have said no" really displays the mind games abusers play with their victims. Many people that go through this start to doubt their own experiences and memory and it's this crazy feeling of not being able to trust yourself and truth/fact. I thought showing the effects of that abuse through adulthood was actually done very well here, and I think that can enlighten us to why Derek never told anyone about Carl, beyond the personal shame and feeling like he wouldn't be believed by others.

He was shocked about the criminal record and taken aback when Morgan wasn't honest with him because he expects that from him because they are close to each other. Hotch just reads as cold because it is his natural demeanor. When Hotch walks in and mentions Carl Buford, and asks him why he doesn't visit him, I also think you can see a bit of his humanity there. He was almost nervous to ask the question because he knew it was something that might have been sensitive to Derek. Or, at least, that's my take.

2024-01-05 21:28:00 +0000 UTCObviously everyone's opinion can be different on these things, but I really don't think Derek can be blamed for not saying anything (not saying you do, because it sounds like you understand why, but I don't think this makes him a flawed character, just a human with trauma). For starters, I thought that from a combination of trauma and wanting to forget, Derek didn't really know or want to believe this was happening with other kids for sure. He hung around the kids to be the positive presence and support system other than Carl Buford, that he didn't have. And even if he did think he was still doing it, the paralyzing fear and shame that he's obviously buried and never worked through clinically, makes his silence even more logical. This episode always really resonates with me. For how I personally relate to it, but also the, I don't wanna say bold, but interesting choice to explore this topic not only with one of our main characters, but a male one and a black man on top of it all. Sexual abuse against boys and men is underreported and brushed aside enough as is, but within the black community that's a topic that's extra sensitve and not handled very well. The show choosing to highlight and explore this with Derek will always shock me. And Shemar Moore's acting this episode was fantastic. Another thing I love about this is how even before this episode we can see the effects of this on Derek. He's always been visibly more affected and hyperaggressive on cases that deal with children being sexually abused. It could be assumed beforehand that it's just because of how vile the crimes are, but now we have an added layer of relatability and empathy Derek must feel. And on the Hotch thing, I just think Hotch is a much more analytical and practical person. He does think of the team as family for the most part, but he has the ability to compartmentalize. He's not gonna coddle and treat Derek like they're friends when there's children's lives at stake and he can tell Derek is hiding information that could potentially help. And his frustration from Derek hiding information comes from the very fact that they ARE friends. But even with the other team members Hotch shows he cares in all the little things. In the very beginning of the episode, when Reid is doing physics tricks, Hotch scolds him for doing it despite being told to stop, but immediately compliments his work as well. And with Garcia, he'll scold her for her inappropriate comments, but smile at the occasionally or get a gift when Gideon upset her. As team leader, he prefers to keep his emotions buried as much as possible when on the job.

2024-01-05 12:49:52 +0000 UTCthank you for saying this!! trauma is a "funny" thing. something can happen and you can put it mentally in a box and "forget" it and years and years will pass and suddenly it comes back i a wave over you. this could be a few months to even a few decades later. there's no "sense" to traumas. it's valid and real regardless of how it when it presents

I know there's always the thought that if he had said something earlier he could have prevented those other children from the same thing, but he was a kid when it happened, and he probably had so much guilt and shame and trauma from it that he didn't feel like he could speak out, or ppl wouldn't believe him, etc. a lot of abuse victims feel the same, like they'd be blamed or looked at differently, or even that they were at fault or asked for it. Idk but I would never look at an abuse victim differently because they didn't speak up about it sooner, bc I don't understand their feelings, the fear. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if he was suppressing all those memories and trauma from that time.

2024-01-05 03:11:35 +0000 UTCso 2 things i wanna comment on, the first is hotch. so I do get what you're saying about him seeming like he doesn't care about morgan and the team, but I feel like in this instance, this is weirdly hotch showing how he cares. He as the team leader also has to have the ability to separate personal from work, so he has to work the case like its a typical case to make sure no one accuses them of a cover up. also, I also feel like hotch being upset that morgan was keeping a secret kinda showed that he did think of him as more than a coworker, he thought they could trust each other with everything I guess. idk I'm really bad at explaining my opinions lol.

2024-01-05 03:08:57 +0000 UTCYour reaction to what happened to Derek was unexpected. I don't think Morgan telling people what happened to him as a kid was that simple. Women barely get taken seriously enough when it comes to sexual assult/rape. Take it from someone who did tell as a young teen, I know for a fact that the police don't care about boys or men who get assulted.
