I agree, the older sitcoms landed jokes that made you think about the punchline. I've always preferred witty comedy over slap-stick. It's like a reward when you get the joke, like you're in on a secret. Its one of the reasons I love The Nanny, Gilmore Girls and Golden Girls. They trust their audience to keep up and if you don't, then maybe it isn't for you.
