Come on.... how you gonna say her looks were too extreme?! They're looks! Clothes and makeup? It's not about Jimmy being a villain. They aren't compatible anymore. They have different humor, different politics and different appearances, and as a teenage boy Jimmy is certainly very occupied with appearances. Everyone needs a partner who honors who they are so they can feel confident, if you're partner prefers how you used to be than they aren't valuing who you are no matter how you want to spin it. Jimmy's not a bad guy but he's clearly not a deep thinker, if he was he'd see that him and Ashley aren't compatible anymore. Not just looks wise-but personality wise too.

You’re right it is a personal issue for her. But the way the show depicted it, he was making her feel insecure…during all of the scenes I already mentioned. It’s not a dig on Jimmy necessarily. I didn’t say he was doing it intentionally or maliciously, but he was doing it. You can make someone feel a certain way with your actions and/or words without doing it on purpose. Just because the emotion was hers doesn’t mean it wasn’t influenced by outside sources. They’re teenagers, they make each other feel things all the time. It’s hormones and heightened senses of reality and ego and all of that. I’m not saying Jimmy is a villain; just a kid that didn’t realize how his actions were affecting his girlfriend’s self image. And Ashley is also just a kid that didn’t know how to speak up for what she wanted and what she was comfortable with at first.

i think it rlly goes to show how teenagers evolve and change and grow into themselves. Jimmy didn’t make much effort to make her feel accepted. i don’t think Jimmy as to be “abusive” to not fully see Ashley for who she is. she’s discovering who she is and she changed to her old look to people please but ended up uncomfortable and feeling unseen. Jimmy constantly brought up how he liked her old look, pictures of them before. It’s fine if he’s not into that look but he made her feel inadequate even if it wasn’t intentional. I like Jimmy a lot, but i think Ashley was in the right to break up with someone who doesn’t embrace who she is. Just teens being teens lol i like this episode a lot i’m glad we’re seeing this very raw and vulnerable side of ashley again but also this confident side where she makes decisions that are right for her and not to please others.

Jimmy isn't making her feel insecure. It's a personal issue on Ashley

Jimmy didn’t specifically tell her to change, but he did make it very very clear that he preferred her the old way—bringing up the yearbook and how great she was last year, the old picture in his locker. And that comment after the guys made fun of her and Jimmy said how they couldn’t see how beautiful she was “on the inside”—which, to a 14/15 year old girl can easily be misinterpreted to mean she isn’t beautiful on the outside anymore. It’s totally fine for Jimmy not to like the goth look, but he got back together with her when she already looked like that. That was a choice. I don’t think she needs to tone it down or find “a happy medium” if she doesn’t want one. She’s a teenager, they go through different versions of themselves all the time. Just because Ellie doesn’t go all dark with the makeup doesn’t mean Ashley needs to look the way Ellie does. She clearly was more comfortable with the full goth. And Jimmy made her feel insecure about it, even if he didn’t mean to, that’s just how it was. I feel like the point of the storyline with the two if them was giving it another chance after how abruptly things ended between them last season. Sometimes people need to do that to see that they aren’t compatible anymore.

Yeah I totally got the punk / scene vibe from her too but he was talking about how Ellie doesn’t overdue and I was just saying you can’t really compare to different people like that

Kristal Whalen

ellie is more punk to me. Or 'scene'.

Angie

I mean I’m not Ashley biggest fan by far but I don’t think you should compare her to Ellie in the sense that Ellie doesn’t go full Goth so she shouldn’t go so dark with the eyeshadow. I think everyone is different when i comes to expressing individuality, but the other points with her in Jimmy were on point. Though they way he responded and commented on how she used to look I could see the subtle ways of trying to get her to change or inform her that he wants her to change.

Kristal Whalen

I’m still annoyed how they connected Taming of the Shrew to Jimmy as if he was forcing Ashley to change. Jimmy was chill, and yes, it’s sad that he preferred one look over the other from Ashley’s perspective, but she always did the absolute most.
