In the Shadows (Shower)
Added 2021-04-08 13:28:39 +0000 UTCIn tone with today's moody weather outside (same weather was during the photoshoot), I'm posting these Film Noir inspired images with Denaya.
You'll see two types of images in this post - in color and in black and white. But color is not the only big difference here. Lighting is the other. The black and white ones are what I started with but the colored ones represent what I was aiming for. I wanted to give the feeling that you, the viewer, are secretly watching her shower. I'm using dramatic and high contrast light with lots of shadows covering almost every place of interest to achieve it. Also, Denaya is not engaging with the camera a whole lot and I left the open door in frame.
In this case camera and lens don't really matter much so let's talk lighting!
Color images. I'm using one flash with a 10 degree on it. The main reason for the grid being I want limit any light spill and control the amount of shadow. The light is off-camera right, you can see it's reflection in the small window on some of the images.
B&W images. Same flash, same grid only this time I'm bouncing it in a white wall which is just behind me and the bounced light is coming through the bathroom door.I'm still using the grid so I can maintain a smaller light source. If I remove it there will be a lot more light spill and I'll end up with a softer shadow pattern.
