Act 15
Mel
Back in their own accommodation, just when Mel was about to sit and scarf down an unhealthy, but tasty burger they got on their way home, it knocked at the door. Aggressively.
Mel rolled their eyes. Only one person in their life was able to start their arguments even before entering the room in such an impressive manner.
They didn’t bother to get up or even say ‘Yes?’ - if they were right, the door would open up on its own.
Sadly they were. Only a moment later a very angry looking woman in her 50s stood in the now open frame. Morris.
“Great, here we go again,” the snake said out loud, who just made itself comfortable in Rosemary’s crocheted cloth on the bed and was about to turn on the TV. With the end of its tail, it flipped the remote away.
“Oh, good, look who decided to return home and eat a damn burger like nothing really happened?” the woman panned her in Dutch, while throwing the door shut behind her.
“Me, apparently,” Mel answered exhaustedly, likewise in Dutch, laying her burger back on the table.
“Ah, acting all innocently, are you? Because to me it seems that you are ABSOLUTELY OUT OF YOUR MIND.”
Mel looked longingly at the burger. They knew it would have turned cold by the time they were finally able to attend to it again.
“You wouldn’t be the first to assume that.”
“Don’t get all sassy on me, Missy.”
“I don’t think I approve of you only calling me female terms when you’re scolding me.”
Morris threw the clipboard she always carried with her on the bed, right next to the startled snake, and pointing her finger angrily in Mel’s face.
“I don’t care for your fucking gender bullshit right now! You’re just fucking out of your mind! Haven’t I explained to you enough why you shouldn’t meet that girl anymore?”
“To be fair, you explained most of it to me, not Mel,” Lusje tried to interject, but was completely ignored.
“I thought I got through to you. I thought you understood what’s at stake. And then the damn porter told me that you’re out and you carried flowers with you. So I check your GPS tracker - thank god you at least carry that stupid thing around - and guess where you’re at? At a little cute place called Balzac. So following a hunch I called there asking to be connected with a certain Rosemary Clarke, and, oh what a surprise, they said that she just left.”
“Wow, you’re not just like a simple helicopter mom, you’re an evolved version. Like the mother of all Karens.”
“SHUT. IT.” Morris yelled at Lusje, who hissed in shock, even backing up a little. Mel had never seen the mighty demon recoil like that before.
“Sheesh, alright, calm down,” the snake mumbled, more to itself than anything.
“I know all this. I’ve been there,” Mel commented.
“Save it! I don’t think you’re grasping the severeness of the situation, Mel!”
“I do.”
“Clearly not! You know what could happen if she finds out and talks? You can’t trust her! You only met her, like what, twice? Are you a fucking naive teenager or something? How can you be so gullible?”
“Morris, I need you to calm down,” Mel said collectedly.
Morris went on, either not hearing Mel or not caring. “Your career, my income, all we worked for for the past decade… poof, gone..The press would eat us up. The court would be involved. The amount of money we would have to bring up for lawyers, bodyguards, bribery… Do you have any idea how much that would be? Or maybe we go the Lusje way and just kill her, do you want that to happen? You stupid tyfushond. All for what? To get laid? Just order a fucking prostitute like any other normal celebrity. Meeting anybody even twice within a short amount of time is insanely dangerous, but…”
Morris lapsed into silence when Mel got up and a little too close into her personal space, towering over her.
“I need you to calm down,” Mel repeated themselves, but this time, there was something intimidating in their voice.
Morris wheezed and crossed her arms, but didn’t comment further.
“Look, Bente. I heard you, and I’m fully aware of all these things. I won’t tell her for now, but if I decide so one day, it will be my choice. I want to remind you that there were two occasions when people found out, and nothing bad happened. In one case, I even got an amazing agent. I appreciate you both as an agent and as a friend, and I treasure your truly astounding management skills. I know you’re angry at me because you care. But listen.
Don’t forget that I’m human, too.
I don’t have any family left, and not a single friend, besides you and the people at home.”
“And me,” the snake shouted out, offended.
“I love my profession and I’m willing to pay the price for it. But I also deserve the bare minimum of a social life. I deserve some happiness, too, Bente, don’t you think?”
Morris' face was hard to read, especially since she was still wearing her sunglasses. But at least her posture seemed to soften.
Mel’s stomach started to hurt and feel nauseated.
They really had to eat soon.
“I’d like to finish our conversation now. They are getting hungry, and you know what happens if I don’t satisfy them soon.”
Morris mustered Mel a little longer, then puffed, took her clippingboard and turned around.
“I’ll let you eat. For now. But this talk isn’t over. You need to involve me in such crucial things in the future, capiche?”
Then, without another word, she left the room.
Mel sank back into their chair, suddenly feeling very weak and tired.
“Now that I think about it,” the demon began saying, “she really does look a bit like an old Karen, right? Haircut and all? Maybe even like a stylish Hitler, if she’d color her hair black.”
“Be kind, she’s doing her best,” Mel replied, but in their mind, agreed at least a little.
