In most stories collars suppress magic/aura or essence in this case, which would be tiered, so far they have only focused on soul defenses. He will likely end up using his will on the flaws or developing a new skill for it.

I would understand if the person who made the slave collar was near the end of their focus, but someone at Zach's level should be able to break out of the collar with little damage.
