The farther luffy knows the more you know. Devil fruits are rare but known to certain people the further you go the more you see, only one person can have a. Certain fruit at s time.

It's probably also worth noting that One Piece has dramatically less filler than the likes of Bleach or Naruto, I think it's something like less than 10% of the series, where Bleach and Naruto are about 50% filler.

Its pretty early to worry about this, since you won't hit one for awhile, but if you plan on skipping filler arcs, be aware that sometimes they include canon material in them, and in at least one instance there's an episode where the first half of the episode is the end of a filler, but the second half is the start of the next canon arc. Personally, I don't think they're worth skipping (unless they're smack in the middle of an ongoing arc, which does happen a few times. Do skip those) as they're pretty short anyway and some are actually really good. But that's up to you, of course).

There's certainly some truth to that. Comments that are like "I can't wait until you see THIS" or ones that try to tell the reactor what to think about a character or situation with their future knowledge.

Other than the minor Glimpses of Zoros backstory, Shanks and Luffys back story is your first real glimpse into the emotional heart of One Piece. It only gets better from here. Just wait for the genius to come you have not even met all the core crew yet and each one comes with their emotional scars.
