Best film of all time .... my interpretation... I'm sure you got w bunch by now... is that the monolith somehow helps the evolution of consciousness... at the end, he is sucked into another dimension where they put him in a room... a comfortable room with luxuries so ge can evolve spiritually ... also, time doesn't go the same as earth so we see him age rapidly ...

Techcnically the monolith on the moon was the same one at the dawn of man, it's just that the aliens whisked it away to bury on the moon once early man had made contact with it.

Ok in a nutshell…..the first monolith influences the early ape-man to use tools and the birth of intelligence. The second monolith on the moon was an alarm letting the aliens that built the monolith that mankind had reached an evolutionary stage by traveling through space. The third monolith was man finally reaching the ultimate stage in human evolution. As for HAL you guys need to see 2010: The Year We Made Contact, it explains what happened to HAL and you completely understand what happened. .

I'm thinking the Monolith is the orgin of life itself.

I've never been more confused watching a movie, like I tried so hard to understand it all lol. My brain was totally messed up, but it makes far more sense the the monolith basically enhances the lifeforms who touch it in some way; but the ending totally blew my brains.

Classic, original, unaltered, that's the way to go. Gonna go ahead and apologize for such a long post, but I LOVE this fuckin movie, and your guys' puzzled faces, and can't hold it all back lol. * The space station spins to simulate gravity, as it spins it pushes everyone to the outside, like a giant merry-go-round. That's why the first space station is one giant spinning wheel, to let them walk on the curved surface, and all the interior shots show weird long corridors where they're moving to the center of the spinning centrifuge, to go to a different part of the station. We've only recently realized humans spending too much time in zero G is actually very harmful, this would help. * Why the battery failed is a big deal because they have this perfect AI that's never made a mistake, that they're depending on for this mission, and it just fucked up, they really need to know why before they continue. * This movie is basically all about the effect the Monolith has on other beings. **Dawn of Man: You see how this propelled "man" forward by using tools, it let us rise above the animals, use it for violence to increase our territory, resources (like the watering hole), you could say this triggered us to form a society. It created a new age. **Modern Day: Man has mastered space flight, and is just starting to explore. Remember this movie came out at the height of the space race against the Soviet Union, a full year before an Apollo mission actually landed on the moon, there was no International Space Station yet, Just getting there was a big deal, hence all the flamboyant showing of space travel, big moon bases, landings, elegant music and long shots like it's all a ballet. This was still purely conceptual to humanity, peak Science Fiction. We discover the Monolith again and create another tool to propel society forward, an extremely advanced AI that has "never made an error", and now we're making even bigger ships, and are going even further out into the solar system. The moon is only a quarter million miles away. Jupiter is a few hundred million miles away. **HAL: The grandaddy of evil AIs, before Skynet, Tron, the Matrix, GLaDOS, there was HAL-9000. I think he represents our own demise coming from our advancement of technology, a sign that propelling society forward may not be what's actually "best for us". ** Dave encounters the Monolith and is again propelled forward into something... we can't understand. A "being beyond space and time". The ending is....very extravagant artistic expression. "Open to interpretation" to the one thousandth degree. You read Kubrick's "explanation" I think, but it's a movie designed to leave you confused, in awestruck wonder, to make you think and question. It was very philosophical, and can be different each time you watch it. Lastsly...."Is it a 4th dimension?" "Is it a bad space acid trip?" "Aliens in flying diamonds?" "Is this where the apes were?" "Am I missing something to understand this?" "Is that the birth of Galactus?" The answer to all of these, and I couldn't possibly be more clear, is yes and no. I have never genuinely laughed so hard watching a reaction (specifically the end), you dudes trying to figure out what the fuck is going on lol.
