I have been anxiously waiting for this to drop! This is one of my absolutely favorite scary movies. As a kid, I used to ask my aunt to tell me a “True Story” that was also scary. My aunt told me pretty much, scene for scene of this movie (she told me and my friend) that it was a true story. We we’re probably about 9 years old. Then, a few years later, my best friend was spending the night and we saw on HBO a commercial/trailer that said “Watch Norman Bates as he has The Bates Motel”. My best friend and I were shocked and watched the movie. We realized my aunt had lied to us by telling us a “True Scary Story” about Norman Bates, and it was actually just a movie. But that’s why I love it! It reminds me of my aunt telling me scary stories as a kid. We both love this movie. Also, I learned from I think Hollywood Studios, that Alfred Hitchcock used Hershey’s syrup in the shower scene to make it look like blood. And I think I read or heard that the actress in the shower scene (is Jamie Lee Curtis’ mom), I heard she couldn’t take showers after this movie. It traumatized her. What a great movie reaction. 2023-10-14 02:59:42 +0000 UTCThe interesting thing is Anthony Perkins was one of the first of that 'Gay actor that all the girls love but can never have while also being in a lavender marriage to a woman' kind of situation he was eventually able to come out later in his career but it had been an open secret in Hollywood for a long time prior. He actually directed and played a huge part in writing Psycho 2 and 3. DO NOT LISTEN TO THE HATERS watch Psycho 2 and 3 and make up your own mind about their quality. So even though Norman was played by a queer actor and dressed as a woman in the movie, in order to get the movie approved and passed the Hayes Code (Film code at the time that controlled Hollywood films and was mostly controlled by the Catholic Church) they had to include that scene at the end where the therapist reassures the audience that Norman was not a real transvestite or anything like that because the Hayes Code at the time banned any and all LGBT+ themes from American Cinema and this movie did not want to push it with the Hayes Code enforcers because they already made the movie contained a scantly clad woman and a toilet flush. I think the reason some of the fans reacted negatively to Psycho 2 and 3 is that the focus changed a bit because Hitchcock is all about theme and framing and style which is good but when Anthony Perkins (Norman) took over as director and often co-writer of the sequels he knew he was no Hitchcock, which is fine, so instead of trying to be something he wasn't and trying out do Hitchcock at his own game Anothony instead made the sequels more character focused on Norman and his progression as a character but the sequels are not bad by any means.
