So from what I know King Sweyn died in 1014, so Aethelred II (aka Aethelredd The Unready) was invited by the English to return to England from Norway to take the crown and become king and Canute was forced to flee to Denmark. While there, Canute gathered troops and returned to England in 1015, managing to conquer nearly the entire country. In short term Aethelred was the English's choice for king while Canute represented the Danes. Canute became king of England in 1016, of Denmark in 1019, and of Norway in 1028 and died in 1035.
