2025-09-23 17:29:34 +0000 UTCI’ve seen some people hate Subaru for how she initially acted, but I’ve always loved her. She was overprotective at first, yes, but she also absolutely had good reason to do so. She’s in a school heavily prejudiced against Chidori, she likely heard rumors about Kaoruko being surrounded by them back in episode 1, and then she saw her once again with a Chidori student at the library. It was VERY easy for her to assume the worst case there and get protective. But even if that moment we saw brief glimpses of her questioning her own belief, like when she seemed shocked by Rintarou stepping in to protect Kaoruko or her later asking what he’s like. From her introduction it’s been pretty obvious that she’s a good person, but with some bad past experiences with boys and a whole lot of self hate. That’s why I find it annoying some people genuinely disliked her at the start. She’s honestly my favorite character in the entire series, especially later on. Kaoruko and Rintarou are fantastic, but Subaru is so interesting because she’s just trying to slowly work through her prejudices and find herself. The main trio makes such an interesting dynamic. Kaoruko is seen by everyone as sweet, energetic, and happy go lucky but she just doesn’t show her doubts and worries to others. Rintarou is incredibly kind and caring, but his outside appearance makes him frightening and he just accepts that stigma without hesitation, even if it hurts him. Subaru is just a genuinely good person, but she can’t bring herself to believe she is and doubts herself. They make for a good trio and a lot of my favorite moments are just them reaffirming each other. The other side characters are fantastic too, but it’s this main core of three that becomes the strength of the series to me.
