Babied by the Boss (Chapter 2)

Chapter 2
A House Guest

“Oh, uhh… wow. That’s very thoughtful of you Ms. Pedigrew, but I wouldn’t want to…” Ms. Pedigrew just smiled at her and interrupted.

“Oh it wouldn’t be any trouble at all Ms. Walker, I can promise you that. I have more than enough space for several guests much less just one. Come on, spend the night, and don’t worry about the train. I’m sure in the morning it will be fixed and you’ll be on your way to spend the night at home then.”

“But I…”

“I insist, I won’t take no for an answer.” The older lady just smiled at her. Stella knew that she had said what she said out of kindness but she wasn’t even for a moment considering that possibly Stella didn’t want to go to her boss’s house or maybe she didn’t mind finding a new way home. Unfortunately, this was Stella’s boss; she didn’t want the woman to think that she didn’t appreciate her hospitality or anything.

“Um, okay. That would be lovely Ms. Pedigrew.” Stella said, doing her best to hide her discomfort from her voice. “Thank you so much.” Her boss looked perkier already.

“Oh wonderful! You will find my house just delightful I promise Ms… Stella isn’t it?” Stella nodded to her question. “Yes, Stella. You will just love it.” As they rode the elevator down to the ground floor and made their way to Ms. Pedigrew’s car the older woman was happy with her victory. This would be an excellent opportunity to get to know the younger woman on a more personal level and find out if she has what it takes to run the company. She was young for sure but smart if she had made it to her position at her age.

Stella was dreading the afternoon if she was being honest with herself. She knew the woman only meant well by her gesture to let her stay with her, but in Stella’s opinion staying at her boss’s place left to many opportunities for disaster. She might say the wrong thing or do something stupid… the whole thing just had her nervous.

Stella gasped as she reached her boss’s car. It was a slick new model car that made it clear that its owner was pretty well off. “Whoa…” Stella said softly.

“You like it?” Her boss said as she got in. “Owning a company can do pretty well for one’s bank account.” Stella felt her jaw stay open in shock as she got into the car and looked around it. It even smelled new.

As Ms. Pedigrew sped out of the parking lot Stella found herself looking out the window at the nearby train station that had been closed for the day. She sighed softly to herself. As they drove Ms. Pedigrew made small talk with her, but Stella felt like it was more of an interview. Ms. Pedigrew asked about her hometown and about how she liked working at the company and things like that. To Ms. Pedigrew it felt like casual conversation, but to Stella, she was choosing her words as carefully as she would as if she was applying for the job for the first time once again. Finally, fate gave her a break and they reached their destination. Stella gasped again when she saw the house. She wouldn’t call it a mansion, but it was at least ten times nicer than the dingy old apartment that she lived in. Maybe staying here wouldn’t be so bad after all…

The two women got out of the car and proceeded up the front steps of the house.

“You were right.” Stella said. “It is a very beautiful place.” The older woman grinned at her.

“Thank you, I do what I can.” Ms. Pedigrew led the younger woman inside and gave her a simple tour of the place. Stella couldn’t believe how big it was. When Ms. Pedigrew had said she had enough space to have a couple guests she wasn’t kidding. There were at least four bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, and who knows what else.

After the tour was over Ms. Pedigrew led Stella to a quaint little room and told her that was where she could spend the night. “Thank you so much Ms. Pedigrew. I really appreciate it.” Ms. Pedigrew laughed.

“Oh dear! I know I’m your boss but tonight you’re my guest. No reason to be so formal. Please, call me Anne.” The woman said it without breaking eye contact. Her warm smile seemed genuine.

“Okay,” Stella replied. “Thank you, Anne.” The name felt strange coming out of her mouth. Anne walked away for a few minutes and gave Stella a chance to unwind a little and put her bag and purse away. Stella realized that she didn’t have any other clothes and would have to stay in her work blouse and skirt for the evening. ‘That’s a pain.’ She thought.

Later that evening, things had winded down a bit and Stella was sitting down to have a meal with her boss. Stella was surprised at how good of a cook the woman was. Clearly there was plenty that she didn’t know about her boss.

“I hope you’ll like that room. The last person who stayed in it was my niece actually.”

“Oh really? How was that?” Stella asked as she softly sipped on a glass of wine. Ms. Pedigrew’s face went a little darker.

“Well… it could have been better honestly.”

“Oh? Why is that?”

“Turns out that the young lady is something of a bed wetter. Her parents forgot to mention that to me and the first night she was here the darling ended up leaking all over my nice mattress and sheets.”

“Yikes,” Stella said with a slight cringe in her face. “That’s too bad.”

“Mattress and sheets totally ruined! Can you believe that? A bed wetter at her age? Fifteen? I couldn’t believe it.

Stella felt bad for the young girl, she spoke up before she considered what the consequences may be. “Oh, well that actually is pretty common among younger people. To be honest I wet my bed from time to time at that age.”

Ms. Pedigrew had stopped her ranting about her niece and turned her eyes towards Stella suspiciously. “Oh really…?”
