50:15 - i think there's an interesting thing going on here where its almost like how the two of you are shounen experts, to newer fans its their first, or first really impactful experience with the shounen and theyre surprised with the potential themes or things that it has to say once it really gets into the nitty gritty of it, but to veterans like you there may be a tiny bit of new introspection or a slight twist that was unexpected still but for the most part you're just walking through it like ah such a familiar genre, i know exactly where we're going. so for some other that more into the broad genre of "internet horror" it was probably easy for them to see doki doki and be like ah yeah that's pretty neat, yay its like a haunted game, its classic creepypasta stuff. that isnt to say that either parties are, or should, be reductive when to it comes to their respective media proficiency's, but its just that some things are more familiar to others and its interesting to see how ez it is to not consider that too

2025-02-15 03:35:44 +0000 UTCWoolie bringing up the "dregs" of horror brings to mind the idea that Horror as a genre, be it games or movies or even books, is akin to cooking with cheap ingredients. Not just the lizard brain sensations it operates on, but even just the fact that historically horror is cheaper to produce. But it's interesting to think about because you end up with a style of storytelling where the subtly of execution becomes everything, and the biggest chefs (studios) in the world can be matched by some 62 year old home-cook grandma (indie studios/single devs) who you only find out exists because you happened to go to a chili contest she entered on a lark one year (i.e. trying a random game you've barely heard of off Steam).
