I was lucky enough to see this almost immediately after it premiered at Sundance. A coworker had been able to get a copy, and lent it to me. This was well before it was released in theaters, or before the cast had appeared on talk shows and magazine covers. I got together with a bunch of friends and we watched it. When it was over, we were just staring at the screen in complete shock and horror. The backlash towards the film always bothered me. Once people realized it was fake, they just lashed out at it, probably because they felt they’d been duped. I think it’s interesting that a short ten years later, Paranormal Activity came out, which was just as fake as Blair Witch, and was so well received and respected.

2022-05-05 04:56:19 +0000 UTCA few months later, when it came out on DVD, I bought it so I could watch it again and see it the whole way through. I did, and was creeped out by it, but loved it. Later that night, I went for a walk around the neighborhood in the dead of the night (a thing I did frequently). One end of the neighborhood had woods on the side of it, so every time I got to that part of my walk, I got creeped out imagining Elly Kedward being in there staring out at me. I was listening to music -- on my old yellow Walkman, probably -- and just kinda keepin' on keeping on, trying to be freaked out. At one point, from between two of the houses ahead of me, a deer came running out of a back yard and bolted up the street toward the woods. I nearly 'bout shit my goddamn pants.

2021-01-16 06:31:20 +0000 UTCI worked at a movie theatre when this came out, and watched it with a bunch of co-workers a night or two before it came out. I was still very apprehensive of scary movies at that time, but wanted to see it, so (in a shocking breach of professional behavior) brought a bunch of beer. Every time things started getting tense, I went to the cooler and got one and downed it before going back in. So not only did I get drunk as a skunk, I missed much of the movie. Loved what I saw, though.
