I've been telling him about your podcast for the last couple years and was thinking about trying to get him to listen to this episode with me but I'm glad I went solo instead 😂😂 That aside, I've really enjoyed listening to your episodes as I do my reread of his books.

I personally enjoyed all the sections of the book, but at the same time completely see the frustrations with it. Personally what had me on edge as he was locked away in Empis (he writes the story, obviously escapes some form of peril), was the risk he returns home to find his dad had gone back to drinking. King didn’t build this up much, but hints at it from time to time. Ultimately I was tearing up as they embraced. Cheers to a fun discussion.

Not to mention he had a run of great films just last decade with Lincoln and Bridge of Spies. Quality aside, I just don’t agree with the argument that Spielberg hasn’t evolved as a filmmaker. He has distinct phases in his career where is approach to filmmaking and thematic interests are vastly different. You can’t say that Amblin era Spielberg and early 2000s war on terror paranoia Spielberg are more or less doing the same thing

2022-10-06 17:59:51 +0000 UTCI felt the same as you all did. Great book in “our” world. Fell off a cliff in the fantasy realm. One note- you mentioned the RL Stine book from 2016 that’s discussed in 2013. There is also a part where Charlie’s teacher asks him about the Phillando Castille and Alton Sterling shootings. Those also occurred in 2016. It’s like King had set the book in 2016, then went back 3 years but said screw it…I can’t remember where all those references were.

2022-10-02 14:24:22 +0000 UTCFor example, the reunion on pp. 480 and 481 made be sob with joy, (with almost 100 pages to go) and I never felt like Radar was gone. So much about this story was sentimental, maybe that’s why some CR’s didn’t like it. For me it was just what I would expect from a writer of SK’s generation, life experience, and abilities. How conversant he is in modern kidspeak (or not) doesn’t bother me at all, having read him for nearly 50 years.
