For this installment, we return to the year 1977, a particularly crossroads period for King as he measured his own fame and success following Brian De Palma's Carrie and his chilling blockbuster third novel The Shining.
It's also the year King decided to revisit in his penultimate The Dark Tower chapter Song of Susannah, which we just covered with our latest book episode. Together, we gauge where King was at through interviews and uncollected works:

If any portion of "Carrie" was published in a magazine before the novel came out, it's news to me. My guess: Randall's right, this was confused reporting. I bet what King meant was that it had been *intended* for Cavalier as a short story -- that he'd sat down to write it with that in mind -- but then it went sideways on him. Maybe he owed Cavalier a story, or maybe he'd looked it it as a sure sale and was kind of pre-banking the check for it. Either way, he probably wrote something else for them to make up for this one not panning out. I wonder what? I am going to wildly speculate that it was "Trucks."
