Oh! When you reacted to this episode the first time, I wanted to explain something about Whistler, but I couldn't because of spoilers. Now that you've started watching Angel I can tell you. I wanted to earlier, after you started Angel, but forgot until now, when you mentioned him here. The original plan for Angel's show was for Whistler to fill the role that Doyle fulfilled. He was supposed to turn out to have visions from the powers that be, drink too much, and set Angel on the right path, returning from this episode as a familiar character who Angel already knew. From what I've read, the actor who played Whistler was in the middle of a full time contract that made it so that he was unavailable to play a large role on Angel. I can't say I'm entirely disappointed, because while Whistler would have been a cool character, and the continuity of having him return would have been neat, I loved Doyle, so it worked out great. Love this reaction so much. You're so fun to watch when you're hammered. LOL
