Even though at this point Murphy was untrustable He was always a survivalist this is why I don't think he would on purpose burn the food they would be eating. Plus the people he went after were involved with his hanging it was more personal for him. The guy throwing extra wood on the fire caused the fire I do believe especially how pissed Murphy got at him and went after him saying it was all his fault.
