I love this episode as a comedic episode. They accomplished a number of things at once in this ep, though. They explored the simmering potential conflict between Willow and Anya. They showed Buffy struggling with her emotions after Riley's departure. They divided the cast up into some very effective comedy duos. I wouldn't say this episode is very important, but it was a lot of fun.

I cannot believe I both missed this theory *and* never put that together myself. That's *amazing.* Thank you for pointing this out, it makes perfect sense in context and gives gorgeous layers to Anya's character!!!! ❤

2020-08-19 01:51:45 +0000 UTCThis episode is always when I want to bring up the fan theory that Anya is perhaps on the spectrum. Willow telling her that she's been around for a long time and should "learn the rules" gets me thinking about what a neurotypical mindset that is. It's not that Anya only recently started being around social cues and customs, it's that people now expect her to adhere to them in order to "fit in." I mean, she talked to human women all the time in order to reek her vengeance, she has a ton of experience with the human world. She might not be familiar with Dr. Seuss because she was a demon, but her overall frustration was more about not being able to tell whether Willow is making fun of her or not. She takes what people say at face value and says what she thinks, but is constantly being corrected by Xander and others for being "rude" when really, she's kinda right: rules are stupid.
