I know Talus is just another BOTW for Gabrielle but he has one of my favourite lines of dialogue in the whole show so I still like his character for the insight he offers. “It’s not how long you live that matters, it’s how well you live.” Beautiful message there. This is what is so great about Xena. The strong and substantial messages behind each episode. You don’t really get that in TV shows nowadays. Makes it seem so empty. There’s no depth to it.

Aw, poor Gabrielle :( I love her heart. THANK YOU!

You’re right; it’s a nice touch that Xena is not entirely natural or comfortable with being someone’s shoulder to lean on.

Celesta is an interesting figure, one original to this series and not taken directly from mythology. (Unlike Hades, of course.) I like this episode, and it has a number of notable aspects, some of which others have touched on. So I’ll just add that I think the somber ending is appropriate even as it catches you off-guard. Poor Gabrielle.

Glad you're appreciating season 1 more now, Judson :-)

I've always felt that the first season of Xena is really good and there are definitely some classics especially towards the end of the season ;-) I know I've seen a lot in fandom that people tend to dismiss first seasons of shows a lot but I've always liked first seasons because its fun to see series finding their identity and building their lore and often there's some quite unique episodes in that feeling out process. This is a really good episode by the way with the whole concept of what would happen to people if death was rendered powerless. Scenes such as the suffering woman being pulled back from death are as you say quite haunting and Talus' fate really hits home in the final few moments especially with Renee's acting. I also really love the nice touch of awkwardness that Lucy gives Xena when Gabrielle seeks comfort.

I watched Xena season 1 when I was very young and never re-watched early episodes because I always had the impression that, much like Buffy, the show only hit its stride in later seasons. While season 1 still has very questionable effects, watching these episodes along with Liam made me realise that I underestimated these early episodes, the heart of this show was always there! The ancient setting and way the characters are written gives you the sense that these are figures from lore, even the non-mythical characters. Glad that everyone is enjoying how the guest characters each episode always have some sort of inner conflict and resolution through a didactic moment, as with both Telus and Sisyphus this time. By the way, how are we liking Gabrielle's new outfit in this episode?
