Milestone Reached! HOLY SHIT!
Added 2015-10-20 14:00:45 +0000 UTCIt's been a few days and it appears that, no, I was not hallucinating - we reached our first milestone!
HOLY FUCKING SHIT.
I was extremely sick when the news came in, so I didn't do the kind of yippy-skippy dance around my bedroom I would have done normally, but I promise it was happening in spirit. It is probably tedious to manually thank all 167 of you, but here, shotgun approach: THANK YOU ALL! I am overflowing.
Alright, alright, let's talk: what does this mean for the channel?
Well, it means making these videos is not a hobby, it's a job, which means they're going to come out as regularly as I can manage. The channel is now, officially, even after Patreon takes their cut, covering my rent, which is a chunk of change I don't take lightly. To survive I'll still have to take other work, but I'm not going to be taking any kind of long-term, 30-plus-hours-a-week type of jobs. I'll be sticking to freelancing or part-time work that can fit around my video production schedule.
This does, in reality, complicate my job hunt. Hustling freelance work is more complicated than temping into something near full-time. And I still can't guarantee a video every month for some while - I will have to take what work I can get, and sometimes it will disrupt my schedule. And I can't start turning down other work til the next milestone, and that's a long climb.
But! As a hobby, the videos would basically be released "when there's time," which, historically, has been... well, infrequent. This Is Phil Fish took months to make because I was doing it "when there's time," and then I didn't release anything else for nine more months. So after the release of the final Kickstarted video, we were looking at something like 1-3 a year. Now we're going to be as close to monthly as I can manage.
There will still be occasional months I can't put anything out. Being nakedly honest, the Kickstarter was only supposed to fund me for 6 months. I stretched it to about 8 1/2, but the last couple months have racked up a bit of personal and credit debt, so I may need to take something short-term and time-consuming to pay some of it off. There will still be a new video in the very near future, but we might see a short gap afterwards. We're playing by ear at the moment, and we'll have to see what other work comes my way.
Nevertheless, you're going to see a lot more of me than you would have otherwise. (That sounds almost like a threat, doesn't it?) I owe all of this to you! We're going to have so much fun together!
