Losing Time To Save Time

Hey all,

I've been toying with an idea all month and I have officially decided to go with it: I'm devoting August to writing. The script for the next video is more or less done (just needs a proper conclusion), and normally I would roll straight into editing. But, instead, this month I'm going keep writing scripts.

The reason It's Not Easy Being Blue came out so quickly (aside from it being one of my shortest videos) is that I wrote the script before The Artist is Absent was complete, so I could go straight into the edit on that one. Shifting gears from editing back to writing really slows the machinery down. Most of last year, while I was finishing one video I had a decent amount of work already started on the next, but this year I've rarely managed to get ahead of the curve.

So I'm going to see how many scripts I can get completed (or near-completed) by the end of the month, and I will move straight into editing early next month. This does mean there won't be another video in August, but it will mean faster and more regular releases of videos in the coming months, which will help us make up the time as well as get you those two videos I've owed you all year.

Hope that sits well with all of you,

-I

Hehe, don't worry about me selling out for clicks. I get a better return in investment through Patreon than I would be getting from ads, and I get more patrons from weirdo shit like the Beginner's Guide video than I do for technically-more-popular stuff like the Sonic video.

OK! Well, for the immediate future, games I am likely to talk at length about include DOOM (1993 and 2016), The Secret of Monkey Island, and Life is Strange. List could change at any time, but those would be worth looking into. :)

Fair points. If it's not much trouble, then having a list available seems like it would be cool. Idk if this would have the same problem you mentioned, but perhaps it could be officially "in no particular order," but with those at the top having low-key more potential for a video? Even if nothing, worst case is just playing a game and waiting to watch the video, so no problem in any case.

Please take your time. Your videos are great, and there's no need to rush. Your content is deeper than any other Youtube person of which I know. Even if you never produce those two videos, it's not a big deal. I just want you to survive (and not sell out for clicks) in this very competitive world.

Hey Kurt, Hmm. I'm hesitant to do that, because I don't like saying in advance what I'm working on. In part because I like surprises, but, in part, because I want wiggle room to change my mind, or shuffle my schedule. Once you announce a topic, people often feel like it's a promise, you know? I've come THIS CLOSE to making a Broken Age video several times but always changed my mind, and it's sort of awkward that I name-dropped it in my Kickstarter campaign. That said, what I can probably do is some sort of Potential Reading List, where I mention a number of games I may or may not discuss in the near future and folks can pursue any that sound interesting to them. Would that work for you, or is a list too broad?

Ian Danskin

I'm cool with it. I have a request that I've ment to mention. If a video of yours is focused on a game, is there any way that patrons can know in advance what game it will be? I always want to play the game before watching your videos (as I think they compliment each other very well, especially having first played a game with no context), but it would be nice to be able to do this before the video comes out. It took me over a month to finish Bastion and it was just killing me to not watch your video. If I finish the game early enough, then it can also leave time for me to reflect on it independently before your video's release (I had already played The Beginner's Guide and I value the time I had to think about it on my own)

Sounds like a good idea.

Relevant from the Tao of Pooh: "The main problem with this great obsession for Saving Time is very simple: you can't SAVE time. You can only spend it. But you can spend it wisely or foolishly. The Bisy Backson has practically no time at all, because he's too busy wasting it by trying to save it. And by trying to save every bit of it, he ends up wasting the whole thing. " So long as you're SPENDING your time doing something you feel worthwhile, we all will benefit. I have found that this work philosophy results in the best outcomes because it's not so worried about the ends, but instead focusing on being in love with the means the whole way through. :)

Jimmy

Sure, that makes sense. Good luck! Looking forward to watching / reading more of your stuff.

whatever you need to do to just never stop making videos.
