A Hard Day

Hey team,

This has not been a good day for me. This has not been a good day for the US, either. For anyone who's wondering, the next video is on its way and should be online soon. I'm checking in now to let you know that, in light of this election, the future of Innuendo Studios is likely to get a lot more overtly political. The channel has never shied away from politics, but has always talked about them in the contexts of video games and web culture. And I will probably never stop talking about video games and web culture. But I'm going to go outside those comfort zones in the coming years. I'm feeling a need to contribute to more than just video game discourse.

Today I'm just giving myself the space to feel as shitty as this shitty, shitty situation warrants. And I don't know how long that's going to take. But but soon enough it will be time to get back to work, and it looks like there's going to be a hell of a lot of work to do.

I'm assuming most of you are aware of my bleeding heart third wave pinko lefty politics by now, so I doubt being stupendously anti-Trump comes as a surprise. Anyone who is bothered by me discussing politics, I will bear no grudges if you cancel your pledge.

For now, if anyone needs support, I'll be in the comments.

Take care of each other,

-I

That sounds good! for a while now I've been kind of hoping that you'd branch out and talk about what ever it is that you feel you want to talk about so I'm looking forward to this

Thanks, Jason! I'm glad the patrons seem to be in favor of it. There's a high risk the YouTube subscribers won't be so excited, and I may lose some of my base, but heck with it. I'll just build a new base.

Ian, it seems that the consensus is that your political ideas are the foundation of our support for your work. That doesn't mean you should ever stop talking about games and games culture, but please don't shy away from being political. You may even find that you get more supporters by doing that. I was discussing with my wife just last night how Trump spread like wildfire because his personal brand and messages compress really well, "and the more compressed information is, the further it can travel on the web." Build the wall. Repeal and Replace Obamacare. Who is Donald Trump? He's the rich real estate tycoon. He's the "you're fired" guy. Even his campaign slogan is a perfectly compressed message. Make America great again. I love (or hate) that word "again." We're going to bring America back to the time when the murder rate was more than double what it is today. We're going to bring America back to the time when 20% of black workers were unemployed, but any high school white kid could get a well paying job. But that entire idea only came to me because of your Phil Fish video. I want to hear your thoughts on this election too.

I starting being a patron because of your political videos. I like the games videos quite a bit, but it's the political discovery and research you do that really impresses me. I can't wait to see what you have up next.

I appreciate everything you do but particularly your 'Why Are You So Angry' series. I shared it yesterday in a thread during which someone was posting MRA rhetoric. I shared it alongside articles written by former MRA activists, by men who have sought to understand and now are firmly allied with a world vision free of sexism. I shared it and invited this person to rise above hate and ignorance, to rise to what they could be.

My days & nights are reversed right now, so I had the entire night to think about it. I made use of Twitter for the first time, as I found myself reading reactions and noticing faces in the crowd. I had a lot of time, I even got around to your twitter, and Sonic Utopia looked really good. It's crazy but in my experience it's people making games that way that produces the most appealing results. I think that's going to be the next wave of solid games. People have long made me uneasy. In general. You want to believe that you can be comfortable around people, more or less. It's much harder to do that when a majority do the unthinkable. It's probably impossible. We're probably living in a whole new world. The blindfold is off. Strangely I've found listening to T. Rex of all things comforting. It's a kind of world that's recognizable but not real at all. It's an alternative to alcohol I guess.

Thanks, Kurt. Politics is difficult for me to talk about because no matter how much I know I'm always aware there is so much I don't know. When I talk about games I'm always on pretty sure footing, and if I get something wrong the stakes are pretty low. I also usually try to have a unique take on things, and I have doubts that I can say anything about politics that isn't already being said. My best hope is that I can synthesize some different things together, put things into context, and maybe bring arguments to an audience that wouldn't get them otherwise. We'll see.

I think you are a fantastic creator and I enjoy your writing, regardless of whether it's dedicated to games or "bleeding heart third wave pinko lefty politics". In fact, it actually was the latter kind of content and its level-headed delivery, that brought me to your channel and convinced me to pledge on Patreon in the first place. So, if anything, your content getting more political is good news. Best wishes (and also condolences as to the election results) from Ukraine.

Taras

I do love your content surrounding games culture, but I am actually ecstatic to hear that you'll be branching out from that as well. For any major topic, I always find myself wishing that you had a video for it. Your eloquent style makes your videos easy to watch with friends and spread your thought provoking words. I've hoped, though not necessarily expected, to hear about environmentalism, religion, but especially politics, because I feel I am relatively uneducated in that field. You're my favorite content creator and I constantly aspire to spread awareness as effectively as you do.

"I will bear no grudges if you cancel your pledge" To the contrary. I could think of no better voice than yours to speak up openly, because we need that more than ever. I'll even increase my contribution to support your endeavors and am myself, looking for ways to use my own small voice to spread the message of hope and resistance that not only the U.S., but the whole world direly needs at this point in time. Best wishes, strength and best of luck, Ian.

There is a lot of yelling and shouting I'd like to do, but that's not how Innuendo Studios works. There are enough angry white dudes on YouTube already.

Ian Danskin

Thanks, Ben.

As an Australian, I felt a lot like this in 2010 when a ridiculous, racist leader was elected. There are still thousands suffering state-sanctioned abuse because of that decision. That event inspired me to get a lot more active: this weekend, after years of building trust and understanding, I will likely be elected to the board of our largest state's actually left political party, which suffers like a lot of left organisations under the weight of competing ideas and directions and lack of resources. I am glad that you are taking this direction, and I will continue to support you, but please keep your constructive tone, which has truly made your videos to date exemplary pieces of criticism.

deconst

After reading this i am now doubling my support. It's not much (now $2 instead of $1) but I for one can't wait to see what comes next.

Who's Dan?

Ian Danskin

Do it.

Today has been shite but it feels like 2000 all over again. I welcome the change of tone in the future videos as any sense of the word "moderate" died last night. The assumption that anything can be apolitical is what lead many good people to assume "both sides must be the same" when it's really not. I'm with you Ian.

Remember: people are better than this. You do you, man. Stay safe.

Alejandro Verdugo

I strongly support this and wish you the best.

Godspeed.

Thanks, Walli.
