Early Access: The Handmaiden (& Updates)

Hey team!

New rough cut  up online. Bit out of the usual wheelhouse - this is a 15-minute dissection of Park Chan-wook's film The Handmaiden, a movie I watched earlier this year and immediately wanted to dissect through the lens of screenwriting principles and feminist film theory. This was an "I'll get to that at some point" video, but, then, I took a lecture class this semester called The Female Gaze in Film and managed to convince the prof to let me do a video essay as the final project, so I bumped it up in the rotation. This way I didn't have to juggle homework for that class with my videos; I could do both at the same time. (I actually used this same tactic with This Is Phil Fish, Who Shot Guybrush Threepwood?, and We Don't Talk About Kenny.)

This rough cut is, well, rougher than usual. There was a bit of a crunch to get it done in time for my final class and there's a bunch of polish it needs to go through before it goes public. (I won't list them all here, as you'll see the final version soon enough.) But I figured it's been so long since I posted anything that it'd be good to show you what I've got sooner than later.

This is the first video on the channel to not discuss games in any way whatsoever, so we'll see how that goes over.

Other News

As you may have gathered from all this talk of finals, I have just finished my college career. Hey, only took fifteen years! I've taken it easy for the last few days to recuperate from the stress of finals, but starting tomorrow I will be kicking into high gear.

Expect this video to be public in the very near future, and for more videos to come soon after. I have a script for the next game-related video finished and ready to go into editing, and I can finally devote the proper attention to The Alt-Right Playbook. This is the last time I will have to thank you for your patience while I juggle work with school, so: thank you so much for your patience.

Things are about to get interesting.

Meantime, enjoy this short write-up I did on Thimbleweed Park  (no spoilers).

Best,

-I

All art is political, Michael.

This reminds me of discussions about the Twin Peaks movie (Fire Walk With Me) in the run up to the new Peaks show on Showtime. I don't know about all of this myself. I think it's reductive to apply political agendas to works of art, or to examine them in terms of a "lens" like this. It strikes me as demeaning and disrespectful and somehow beneath the work itself to not simply accept its events on their on terms in a way that is comfortable with the uncertainty that comes with that. Instead of throwing up and closing off doors, we can choose to just incorporate these things into our beings so that media informs our politics and identities and not the other way around. Politics and art are both very important, but I think one is closer to the earth and one is closer to the spirit.

Haven't seen it, I'm afraid. I might seek it out at some point for comparison.

Can I ask what you think of the tv 2-parter (2005) for Fingersmith if you've seen it? I plan to watch this version at some point but a few weeks ago got to watch that one with my gf and it was wonderful. Great video too, I rarely find critiques where the negative aspects are fairly explored

Ian you could release a 45 minute critique of a cookbook and I would watch every minute

Thanks so much for making this. It very clearly articulated my feelings after watching it (as a queer woman).
