I Am A Damned Liar

Hey team,

Time makes fools of us all! My promise to you was that, when I got back from my holiday travels, I would put in the remaining days of the month working on the next video and send you a rough cut, whatever state it was in, before the end of the month. What ended up happening was, when I got back from my holiday travels, I promptly got sick and spend several days in bed.

So there's no rough cut to set you because no editing has happened. I've got a script, but nothing recorded and nothing drawn. Which means we are entering 2019 two entire videos behind schedule. I fall on my sword and beg your forgiveness.

What I normally do in these situations is go into semi-overdrive and put everything on a backburner until we're caught up, but, you know what? I think that's a bad idea. There are a lot of things I want to get done in 2019, and most will take a lot of prep and planning. I want to make more mixtapes. I owe you a podcast. I owe you annotations. There's that larger narrative project I've teased. It would not be good planning to put them on hold until March or April or by whenever I could swing two extra videos.

So, instead, I'm going to make you a bargain: Before the end of 2019, I will get you these two extra videos. (Unless time makes a fool of me again.) I will try to shave a few days off the schedule here, a week there, until we're caught up, but, for the most part, I'm going to try catching up without letting a bunch of my other plans slide. It'll make the catch-up slower, but it will make the channel better overall.

So that's the plan! Happy New Year.

-I

I almost never appear on camera, but, when I do, I just use the webcam on my computer. For most of the channel's history I was editing in Final Cut 7, but switched to Premiere last year. <3

Do not burden yourself with trying to make these videos. You make informative, interesting, thoughtfull work. I'm happy with that. Side question what do you use for your production? What camera's are you using? Do you use premiere pro to edit? Just curious. I am a smartphone filmmaker so I am always interested in what people are using for their film/video work. You don't have to answer the question. If you don't want to. Anyway, thank you for the amazing work. Keep it up and take your time.

Hear, hear!

Adding my voice to the chorus that says please create at a pace you're comfortable with. Your work is fantastic and important and you should take the time you need for yourself and so the end product is something you're proud of.

Pavol said it better than I ever could. Not buying a product off you nor do I want to own part of you, I'm just happy to support you financially, so you can do you, which I very much like.

…and the two videos you thought you owed us, are hereby permanently of the schedule! By the power of Patreon, I herby absolve you 🙌 of any guilt you’ve been feeling. Don’t be silly, be free, we 💌 you!

Pavol Vaskovic

Hey Ian! You are here on Patreon, being supported by a wide community of small donors. It does not mean you have thousand bosses to please. Our relationship is not strictly transactional. We are not buying your output per minute of video. That’s a fucked-up capitalist master-servant attitude that needs to die. You are an honest, self-motivated individual with impeccable work ethic. You have proven that multiple times. You have earned our trust by creating amazing video essays that broaden people’s horizons and give us new thinking technology. That’s why we love and support you! So let’s not burden ourselves with the harmful feeling of guilt anymore. Whenever you get sick or need to rearrange your pre-announced work for any life-in-the-real-world reasons, however you see fit, it’s fine with us. Stop beating yourself over this! You just tell us how you’re doing, and we’ll send you chicken soup for the soul over the Internet. And we’ll be here to hug some sense into you, when the fame corrupts your soul and you start slacking, drinking martinis instead of sharing your gifts with us. Deal?

Pavol Vaskovic

As ever, you do your thing as you do it. I'm honestly never keeping count of what you promise versus what you deliver because the quality of what you deliver matters WAY MORE than the quantity. Also, Happy New Year. And there is noting to apologize for because illness happens.

Kait Hatch

Not sure how you can hold yourself accountable for getting sick, so there's no lie, certainly not a damned one. And I'll make you a counter-offer on your bargain: a natural consequence of prioritizing more important work over less is that stuff gets cut. So my offer is, if you'll cut what you need to cut, permanently and without promise of replacement, I'll trust your judgment. How's that? Happy New Year!

PC Escobar

Happy New Year and please listen to all the people here telling you to look out for yourself and your health! Your work in 2018 was really great and I don't feel like you owe us any extra videos.

I couldn't agree more. Please listen to us @Ian. As somebody who has lost a few years of my life because I didn't pay attention to myself I worried as I am seeing you repeat some of my previous behaviors. Be nice to yourself. Allow yourself to accept your disappointment that you didn't hit your high expectations. Trust yourself that your judgement of your best usage of your time was correct and that it is ok to drop things. It is needed when you always shoot high. Please don't hesitate to contact me in private if you want to hear more about my journey and the parallels I see.

Happy New Year you absolute Unit! Your content is a resource I couldn't begin to fully appreciate. Thanks for letting me try!

Sick pay is a great way to look at it. Adding my voice to the choir of please don’t burn yourself out. Your work is no less appreciated and valued no matter how fast you churn it out.

Sloane

Can I I just +1 the statement of "don't burn yourself out". Consider it sick pay if you like. Your content is valuable no matter if you produce 1 video or 21.

Alex Bryson

you're good, my dude, you don't need to exhaust yourself to satisfy us! I'm looking forward to your posts!

kendall

I’m happy to wait a while longer for a video, and would feel better knowing you weren’t working an unhealthy schedule to get them out the door. Just look your boss in the eye and say, “Not Today!” I’m sure he’ll agree with you instantly.

Sabiryth

I am firmly in favor of "don't push yourself to the point of burnout" - pace yourself, take care of yourself, and see you in the new year. :)

The Packbats

Hey, beeing sick is a thing that happens, don't stress yourself because of the consequences : ) We support you because we want you to continue making Videos, you don't owe us anything more then trying to make them at a pace that is healthy and productive for you ^^ I'm realy glad you're on YouTube, you are currently my favourite channel : ) have a great new year ^^

Sascha Moros
