How to Radicalize a Normie: Step Four (rough)

I think I implied this one was long, but with a lot of pruning and streamlining it is now only somewhat longer than the other parts! overall, tweaks and revisions have hacked the script down from 15 pages to 13. Huzzah!

More to come soon. Cheers.

How to Radicalize a Normie: Step Four (rough)

Comments

I think the final statement, "Change Gabe's surroundings..." is crucial.

I think Three Arrows also did a really good “pipeline video” as well, along with the “how societies turn evil” if you’ve peeked at those yet. Btw your videos are having this weird side effect of “how to radicalize a leftist to go give these poor white boys hugs if they don’t stab me.” It’s just weird, my spouse is a twin. Both of them in the military, their twin got out and became this radicalized neonazi while my spouse is this “I get tired of YouTube/get bored with games/the only way to stop this nonsense is human connection.” All that said this radicalizing is also what the military does. This is part of how they “other” the “enemy” and is a much more troubling occurrence especially since they all have guns but the only way to be in the cool kids club is to send 4chan memes. With no “active” war and the current President’s rhetoric things have been quickly escalating from what was uncomfortable in 2015 till today where I won’t go to any events. My rambling thoughts... Also can’t wait to see your sources list! I love your videos but I love all the extra reading material that comes with it. 😍

This is coming along very well, Looking forward to seeing this in it's entirety.

More directly, I think stochastic-ism alone can accidentally glorify the acts, and be a bit naive in missing where there are deeper ties. ie. McVeigh types become pushed down the onion, but look what "kind of hell" he can create! When there tend to be quite direct ties to other radicals that play a big part. (In McVeighs case, the OKC bombing he carried out was planned to precision long beforehand, and there are indications he was not the leader with his two compatriots, not to mention leads linking to yet others.)

Not sure if my last comment went up but Ill move along to my nagging critiques: I like that you've avoided the "direct stochastic terror" simplification and talked about the stochastic move deeper and deeper into the alt-right rabbit hole. I have some problems with the Pewdiepipeline video and the purely stochastic view of rad right terror, particularly because it tends to over-simplify a lot of violence that is quite literal, connected organized terrorism. So I've been happy you've spoken about social framework instead. Neiwert and others avoid "stochastic terror" and instead talk about "scripted violence" as a better notion, because it's not that x normie will become the next OKC bomber, or but that x normie will go down the slope until OKC, Christchurch, etc. is normalized to them. Just being on deepest layer of the onion does not make an Atomwaffen recruit or a Mcveigh, that takes a far more direct push. So overall im happy that you've focused more on social ties than an individual gradual slide.

WGM

Just to reiterate, I’m not saying there’s anything wrong. I just recognize this feeling of wanting it to be true. So easy to turn off brain, join mob. Ironically topical.

I am drawing some original conclusions here, which I'll need to justify in the Endnotes. But this is probably the most heavily-researched video in the series, and I feel pretty confident that my original ideas are accurate for *some* percentage of people being recruited.

One thing that I noticed is this is basically how religion works. They don't actually have good evidence or coherent arguments and so you get repetition (at least once a week if not more...if one attends services as expected). Plus you have your "thought leaders" that have to deliver the repetitive messages, which fits in with your point about the normie having difficulting in presenting the argument themselves.

It may be a difference between the way the English say it and us Americans where the English, being neighbors with France and all, still pronounce it like a French guy would expect. But us Americans, being more divorced from the French influence, have changed the pronunciation to fit more into our culture. That is to say the pronunciation has been allowed to evolve here. Which is fine. Both pronunciations are fine. Languages are allowed to evolve. But that's just my two cents.

Leo Buzalsky

This is really coming together Ian, this video is also very good. Not much critique from me, just that I think you're on the right track

I honestly don’t know how I would improve it in this regard. It’s certainly not a format that’s easy to include citations or other evidence inline. I just don’t want it to be true only because I want it to be true.

Critique: The longer I watch this series the more I have doubts about the facts of the next statement. It’s very engaging, but I can’t shake the feeling that it sounds full of truthiness. The story and reasoning is one I desperately want to believe. Pessimistically, I’ve associated that feeling with the abdication of intellectual responsibility. It all conveniently reinforces many of my preconceptions about the racism and bigotry online. A danger sign.

Also the Alt-Right scorn of anime is appropriate as the core idea of most (if not actually all) shonen anime is that a bland, unremarkable cis guy can accomplish ANYTHING IF HE BELIEVES IN HIMSELF!!!!111 (caps for genre tone) The somehow-catnip to every beauty he'll meet is tied directly to this. So what's the "Forever Alone ;_; " need to believe? Quite the opposite, of course.

Will their be an episode on language like "Beta," "Omega," Chad," etc? Cuz that shit is _everywhere_ in gaming communities. I haven't yet heard it said out loud (re: offline), but I also don't have any 20-something friends.

Berettadin

Wow wow wow, man. With these steps uploaded bit by bit I feel like I'm seeing a masterpiece being written in front of me.

You're getting the most up-to-date version of the script on this one. The last two parts I didn't re-record after streamlining, so they're a little less clear. Glad the revisions are working!

Ian Danskin

good catch!

Ian Danskin

Great stuff. At ~2:30, the graphic says "loney" instead of "lonely".

Kit Sovereign

This is my favorite so far. Maybe because its good points are more condensed than the other videos? I had to pause to think about what you just said several times. (Not saying every video should be dense!)

Lana Sinapayen

NOT THAT IT MATTERS BUT LET THE RECORD STATE that I set this to Unlisted multiple times and YouTube kept saying it was Private. This was YouTube's fault not mine!

Ian Danskin

should be working now

Ian Danskin

Hey all, should be working now.

Ian Danskin

Can't wait to see it. Still private for now.

Christopher Stoll
