Ian, to be fair (I don't as a matter of course feel any overwhelming need to be FAIR to the alt right but occasionally my personal obsession with fairness in general gets the better of me)... Can you think of any population, cohort, demographic, or group that is receptive towards or enthusiastic about "being studied"? Because I can't. I think studying a population is somewhat inherently invasive. This doesn't excuse anything the alt right does but when you call them a population that is "incredibly hostile to being studied" I don't think there's anything even slightly incredible about it. You talk about power dynamics a lot but the "researcher" > "subject" relationship is one that I think automatically puts the latter group on the defensive at least somewhat. Esp. in conjunction with the fact that you have said in the past you aren't interested in dialoguing with them, just talking *about* them.

It kinda seems like the existence of an actual leader isn't strictly necessary? Q seems a lot like Orwell's Big Brother.

@Aaron Qanon is touched on briefly in How to Radicalize a Normie. Also, I'm sorry your mom is caught up in that :/

Already watched the vid... great speech, if they taught attachment theory in high school health class, all people would be much better off.

@ian have you look into or read anything about qanon? The way you describe hate groups “engulfing ones online life” sounds a lot like my mom, who I’ve been told can spend all day reading qanon stuff, and the way they developed their own language and system of excluding outsider information sources seems pretty culty, but the thing it seems to lack is a charismatic leader... nobody knows why “q” is, so there’s not really anyone to idolize except for those like my mom who thinks trump is q
