Bonus Video: Good Scansion (PPT Party)

Hey team!

For my birthday last month, I threw a PowerPoint Party. I had friends give 10-to-15-minute presentations on a niche topic of their interest: I got presentations on Top 5 Gayest Team Sports, Penguins of the Falkland Islands, Pro Wrestlers as Watercolor Paper, and A Crash Course on Modern Solar Energy.

This is a (semi-faithful) recreation of the keynote address that I gave on poetic meter.

WARNING: PARTS OF THIS MAY BE CRINGE.

[note: this version is slightly different from the one I am uploading to Nebula: the original contained footage from the 1978 film adaptation of Watership Down, but YouTube copyright flagged it so aggressively that it was blocked in the US and Canada; so I've replaced the YouTube version with stills. it is otherwise unchanged.]

"dactyl and troche" scans with "Eleanor Rigby"

I absolutely adored this video. It took me back to high school Latin class where we scanned a ton of Virgil. Also whenever a phrase is a dactyl+trochee I sing it like Eleanor Rigby

First saw this on Nebula, and it's amazing! And I do love the idea of a Powerpoint party, although I doubt I could come up with something this creative.

We teach some of this to our linguistics undergrads and one of the TAs rightly pointed out Megamind's "Metrócìty", which works doubly well because the wrong scansion changes the vowel quality. Also agree with the comments above that hey you can sing too?

I couldn't remember how to spell "boricuir" (is that even it???)

Wow wow I see you left out one of the presentations from the list 🥲 😝
