2023-03-24 06:27:29 +0000 UTCThe other very visual thing they changed in the movie was that the next time Johnny sees Carmen she's shaved her head like most of her fellow pilots, because long hair in freefall around sensitive instruments is silly. Can't imagine anyone asking Denise Richards to shave her head, though, or even put on a bald cap.

2023-03-24 01:09:43 +0000 UTCIt's only a single paragraph, I think, that almost everyone I've ever seen discuss this book misses, but you didn't have to join the military to become a citizen, you had to sign up for civil service and do whatever job they assigned you for two years to get your citizenship and become enfranchised. With an active war on most people were getting assigned to the military, and also, it's a boy's adventure story of a certain time, so of course Johnny gets assigned to the military, but even while Johnny was out committing war crimes in his super badass expensive kit there were people on his world earning their citizenship by being a janitor in a town hall for two years.
