Yeah the whole "They're back" thing being a feeling is total bullshit and pissed me off, the creators knew exactly what they was doing. They dangled that infront of us to keep us watching in S1 and entice us for S2, then copped out on us when it came time to explain it. I mean why even have that in there in S1 if THAT was the explanation they gave us? Yeah cause they wanted everyone to be like "Omg she said Rick's back!" they saw the fan theories and just decided to deny us with a huge troll face when it came time for Carol to reveal it.
