They did have naval battles in the Colosseum. But the sharks, no. Dudes riding rhinoceri? No. What the hell were those monkey/dog hybrids in the beginning? And Caracalla wasn’t such a bitch. I’m not even done with it yet but it’s like sci-fi Ancient Rome. Worst of all the character assassinated Maximus. No way he would have ever cheated on his wife. Also I don’t expect Denzel or Pedro to be scholars of Roman history, but if they were I don’t think they would have taken these roles. Best: it was a cool movie to watch and props to Steve for figuring out that Hanno was Lucius way before I did! ETA: “a reach but still pretty badass” is a great summation.

In Gladiator II, Macrinus is a Roman emperor portrayed by Denzel Washington. The character is loosely based on the real-life Roman emperor Marcus Opellius Macrinus. The real Macrinus: - Was a wealthy member of the equestrian class, a social class below the senatorial class. - Was born in Caesaria, in what is now Algeria. - Trained as a lawyer and became a praetorian prefect under Emperor Caracalla. - Conspired against Caracalla and had him murdered. - Became emperor from April 217 to June 218. - Ruled from Antioch with his son, Diadumenian. - Was defeated in battle by Lucius Verus. The fictional Macrinus: - Is portrayed as a former slave, arms dealer, and gladiator troupe owner. - Is depicted as an ambitious nouveau-riche. - Is revealed to have been enslaved by Marcus Aurelius. The movie's portrayal of Macrinus is fictionalized, but it does include some historical facts.

Yes, the Colosseum in Rome, Italy was flooded to stage mock sea battles called naumachiae. These events were a form of public entertainment. How it worked: - The Colosseum was flooded using a system of canals, sluice gates, and pools. - The water level was shallow, so flat-bottomed ships were used. Land animals like horses and bulls were trained to act as sea monsters. - An artificial island was sometimes created in the middle of the arena.

a whole lot is weird about this movie in my opinion i always thaught their was chemistry between lucilla and maximus like they were together at some point or something but yeah retconning of the age of lucius is dumb as heck and the cgi monkeys threw me right out of the serious feeling the original gave me

Tyrell Patrick

Both their kids are the same age in the first movie so that would imply that he got with both of them the same time and that's a big nope for me... it's why they had to retcon Lucius' age in the second movie

Nikki & Steven

I thought it was implied in the original that Maximus got with ole girl before he had his wife, maybe that clears it up a bit

Cowboy

I loved the original but I always thought the Lucia's was always Maximus's son from the conversation the two of the had early in the movie alone in the original

Audra Muncy

it was a pale pale imitation of the original.
